The House of the Canon in the Gothic Quarter of Barcelona is the only 11th century building built on a Roman foundation and still surviving, although it has undergone repeated rebuilding. Once there was an almshouse for the poor and homeless of the city. Here they could get an overnight stay and a free lunch. In 1450, the building was transferred to the ownership of one of the priests of the Cathedral - the canon. The building is connected by an openwork neo-Gothic bridge-gallery with the Government Palace.
