Photo & Description

Whitman Park is a 4,000-hectare bush in Swan Valley on the headwaters of the Swan River. The recreational area is located 22 km north of Perth. The nature of the park is surprisingly diverse - here you can find more than 450 endemic plant species and about 150 animal species, including rare and endangered ones. More than 17% of the bird species found in Western Australia live in the park, including migratory ones, which are attracted here by Bennett Brook and the adjacent wetlands.

The park got its name in honor of Lew Whitman, who bought the land back in 1939 to graze livestock, and a few decades later turned his estate into a popular picnic spot. In 1978, the state government began to acquire land, to protect the aquifer located here, which provides Perth with drinking water. In 1986, the park was officially opened to the public.

Today, Whitman Park has many hiking trails, bike paths, playgrounds and sports facilities. You can go around the entire territory of the park in a small electric tram. Here you can also visit the Museum of Tractors and the Museum of Engines, which contain all ground transportation. Museums are designed to change the way we think about transportation and how it changed our lives. An interesting attraction of the park is the Children's Forest - a place where parents and relatives of a newborn child can celebrate the new life by planting a tree.
