Photo and description

Chocolate house - this unusual name hides a building built in the 80s of the 19th century. The building is stylized under the Venetian Renaissance; the merchant Semyon Mogilevtsev was the customer of the house. The famous architect Vladimir Nikolaev designed the Chocolate House. The house got its name for its unusual color, made in chocolate brown shades.

For a long time after the civil war, few could get into this building. At first, the Central Registry Office was located here, and when the residence of the top management was located nearby, for the sake of its safety the registry office was moved to another place. Since 1986, the Children's Art Gallery has been located in the Chocolate House - an ideal place for creativity, which was facilitated not only by its long history, but also by the building's entourage.

The gallery was located in the Chocolate House until 2009, when the building was transferred to the Kiev Museum of Russian Art. This fact had a positive effect on the building, since it was the museum that began to carry out restoration here. Thanks to the restoration, the stucco molding, the walls and the unique parquet that has fallen into a miserable state have been put in order. Everything that the house of people had previously enjoyed was preserved - it is both wooden inlay and wonderful paintings. Unfortunately, they could not save the magnificent stained glass windows with irises, costing more than tens of thousands of dollars - some of them were simply not saved. Each area of the Chocolate House is unique as it uses different styles. So, on one floor alone, you can find Oriental, Byzantine and French styles, Renaissance and Art Nouveau.
