Photo and description

At the very end of the 19th century, a significant event for the city took place in Amsterdam. On a vacant lot in the southern part of the city, three buildings were built at once, which now form the Museum Square and play an important role in the life not only of Amsterdam, but of the whole kingdom. These are the State Museum (Rijksmuseum, 1885), the Concert Hall (1888) and the City Museum (Stedelek Museum, 1895).

The building of the City Museum is made of red brick, with a small turret, in the style of the Dutch Renaissance of the 16th century. From the inside, the building was reconstructed and modernized several times.

First, the City Museum told about the history of Amsterdam. Antique furniture and utensils were exhibited here, as well as insignia of the Amsterdam police. At the beginning of the 20th century, the museum's profile changed somewhat. The museum collection begins to appear not only objects of decorative and applied art, but also paintings by contemporary artists - paintings and graphics. The Stedelek Museum was the first of the contemporary art museums to purposefully collect and exhibit photographic works.

Almost all areas of contemporary art are represented in the museum collection. It contains a significant collection of works by Russian artists of the early 20th century: Chagall, Kandinsky, Malevich. In the museum you can see the works of Cezanne, Picasso, Monet, Renoir. Much attention is paid to representatives of the most modern trends and trends. In general, the collection of the museum has about 90,000 exhibits and continues to grow.

In 2012, a new museum building was opened.
