Photo and description

Museum of Volcanology, located in the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, & nbsp; Is one of the main cultural attractions of the city. Founded in 1963, the Museum of Volcanology is the only museum of its kind in Russia. Initially, the museum was part of the Laboratory of Active Volcanism, but no one was involved in its development for quite a long time. In January 2005, the Museum of Volcanology became a structural subdivision of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The main task of the scientific and organizational activities of this museum is the collection, systematization, processing and storage of collections of unique samples of volcanic, plutonic and post-volcanic rocks, schemes, photographs and videos about expeditions and volcanic eruptions in order to study them. Museum visitors can see many unique collections of ore and mineral specimens, as well as lava from the volcanoes of Kamchatka, the Kuril Islands, Italy, Japan, USA, Mexico, Iceland and New Zealand. All samples of minerals were thoroughly studied, thanks to which their chemical composition was established.

A lot of fragments of cooled volcanic lava with all kinds of inclusions formed as a result of high temperature and colossal pressure are of particular interest to the museum visitors. The museum exposition acquaints visitors with extinct and active volcanoes of the Kamchatka Territory, mud pots, geysers, thermal springs and fumaroles.

The Scientific Museum of Volcanology closely cooperates with the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, due to which museum exhibits are constantly updated and replenished.

The Specialized Museum of Volcanology in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky is very popular with lovers of nature and geography, with everyone who wants to learn more about such amazing and unique natural phenomena as volcanic eruptions.
