The Gomel Puppet Theater began its activity as a group of puppeteers at the Gomel Regional Drama Theater in 1963-1968. In 1968, the young creative team became an independent Gomel city puppet theater. The founder of the theater, its ideological inspirer and permanent director for 20 years was Viktor Chernyaev.

Most of the theater performances are intended for children. These are kind instructive fairy tales, designed for a young audience.

In 1986, the Honored Artist of Belarus - Vladimir Matros became the main director of the theater. From that moment on, many performances on Belarusian drama appeared in the theater's repertoire. Such wonderful performances as "Gift of the Forest Tsar" by S. Klimkovich, "Fern Flower" by G. Korzhenevskaya, "Grandfather and Crane" by V. Volsky.

Since 1994, the Gomel Puppet Theater, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Belarus and the Belarusian Children's Fund, has been holding a charitable action "Theater for the Children of Chernobyl". More than 50 performances a year are given in the areas of the so-called Chernobyl zone - the areas most affected by the accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

In September 2002, the building of the Palace of Culture on Pushkin Street with an auditorium at 214 was transferred to the Gomel Puppet Theater places. In 2007, the building was completely reconstructed and refurbished. A clock with artistic striking was installed on the facade of the building.

Near the entrance to the Gomel Puppet Theater, there are bronze sculptures of the most beloved fairy-tale heroes: Buratino, Malvina and Artemon, Karabas Barabas. This sculptural composition is very popular with children who come to the performances and pre-set them to the atmosphere of a fairy tale.
