Photo and description

The Museum of Fine Arts of the city of Cordoba is located in Plaza del Potro, in a building formerly occupied by the Hospital for the Poor. Another part of this building is occupied by the Julio Remero de Torres Museum. The two-storey building of the old hospital was built and decorated in a reserved baroque style. The main facades of the two museums face the square. A courtyard with beautifully planted trees, in the center of which is a picturesque fountain, gives a special charm to this building.

The museum was founded in 1862, and initially its collections consisted of art objects confiscated from various monasteries after their destruction. Subsequently, the collections were replenished largely thanks to donations made by both private individuals and the government of Andalusia. Today, the Museum of Fine Arts exhibits large collections of painting, sculpture, graphics. To a greater extent, here are the works of Spanish masters belonging to the Baroque and Renaissance periods. Here you can see paintings by artists such as Antonio Palomino, Juan Luis Zambrano, Rafael Bote, Pablo de Cespedes, Pedro de Cordova, Murillo, Jose de Ribera and many other outstanding painters. No less interesting is the collection of sculptures, including works by such masters as Juan Cristobal, Julio Antonio, Juan de Messa, Matteo Innuria. Special attention should be paid to the amazing collection of graphics, which includes the works of the outstanding Francisco Goya.
