Subsequently, a city was formed within its walls, which grew over the years, and eventually stretched right up to the sea. In the Hellenistic era, Alexander the Great captured Koria, and surrounded the castle of Marmaris. Local residents, realizing their helplessness, set fire to the castle and left the city. However, the invaders, seeing the successful strategic location of the castle, eventually partially restored it. Before the return of the troops to their homeland, several hundred soldiers were stationed here. In 1522, the castle was rebuilt and fortified by Sultan Suleiman the First, after which it was used as an additional base for the military fleet of the Ottoman Empire. The castle received its original appearance in 1979 after restoration. In 1991, the doors of the castle were opened to tourists. Today, the castle is a real museum, consisting of seven galleries. The first gallery displays gifts and awards , belonging to the seventh President of Turkey - Kenan Evren. The second gallery presents ancient artifacts found during archaeological excavations. Third gallery presents an exposition of a traditional Turkish house built in an ethnographic style. The fourth gallery is the office of the castle commander.
