Photo and description

Bratislava is getting prettier every year, acquiring more and more amazing architectural structures, which could later become the hallmarks of the Slovak capital. Recent developments include the Apollo Bridge, built on the Danube in 2002-2005. It is located between Priestavny and Stary bridges. It got its name in honor of a local oil refinery. During construction, the bridge was named Koshytsky in honor of the street it continued.

The peculiarity of this bridge is that it was built for 3 years on one bank of the Danube, and then, with the help of pontoons, one of its end was moved to the opposite side of the river. The installation of the bridge was completed within a few hours. This graceful arched structure has no corners, it consists of smooth lines, therefore it is considered incredibly difficult. Its length is 850 m, and its width reaches 32. The bridge has a very bright, unusual night illumination, which immediately distinguishes it in the night panorama of the city. The Apollo Bridge connected the most important highways of Bratislava and allowed to relieve the neighboring bridges.

This building was nominated in 2006 by the American Society of Engineers and Technicians for the prestigious Opal Awards. It was the only European building that was presented and awarded that year. The Apollo Bridge was voted "Build of the Year 2006".

The designer of this structure is engineer Miroslav Matashtik. The development of a system for protecting the bridge coating from corrosion was carried out by Peter Nevechny.
