Photo and description

The most famous theater in Slovakia bears the title of national and has at its disposal stages, which are located in two buildings located in different parts of the city. The main building of the theater is located in the historic center of Bratislava on Hvezdostavova Square. This luxurious neo-Renaissance building with a loggia supported by graceful columns was erected in 1884-1886 by architects from Austria - F. Fellner and H. Helmer. The pediment of the theater is decorated with a sculptural composition, the central place in which is the image of the muse Thalia. A more modern building is located outside the central zone of the Slovak capital. It was erected in 2007 on Pribinova Street near the new Apollo Bridge. In addition to traditional opera and drama performances, experimental performances are staged here, which create a real sensation among theatergoers and for a long time occupy first places in the rating of the most significant cultural events in Bratislava.

The troupe of the Slovak National Theater first gathered in 1920. The first performance shown from the stage of the city theater was a play by Bedrich Smetana. At first, only Czech actors played leading roles in the theater, and the performances were performed only in Czech. But in 1926 the first Slovak opera was staged here. In the 1930s, local Slovaks took over the management of the national theater in Bratislava. During wartime, the theater stage was often used for concerts. Immediately after the end of the war, for several years, performances based on the works of Soviet writers could be seen here. Currently, the repertoire of the Slovak National Theater includes operas, ballets and drama performances.
