Photo and description

The Marche National Archaeological Museum is located in the heart of Ancona, near Piazza dello Plebiscito. Since 1958, the museum's rich collections have been housed in the Palazzo Ferretti, built in the 16th century and restored in the 18th. The exhibits of the museum date from the Paleolithic era to the early Middle Ages. Part of the expositions of the period of Ancient Rome, including an extensive collection of medals, occupies the basement of the Palazzo.

Particularly noteworthy are artifacts from the Paleolithic period - bowls of a linear design, vessels decorated with a cow's head, a female figurine found in Tolentino, etc. The Bronze Age collection is represented by 25 magnificent knives from the Ripatransone vault. As many as 23 halls are occupied by an exposition dedicated to the Iron Age, - it invites visitors to plunge into the times of the civilizations of Picena and Gallica. The most fascinating exhibits include bronze vases and shields, silverware and ivory items brought from Etruria, decorative Attic vases, priceless gold jewelry from the Hellenic and Celtic periods, and the famous head of a youth found in a temple in Calia. The latter is an excellent example of late classical Etruscan art. Local art includes some original items such as bronze pendants, human figurines, and the double head of Taurus and Arius. Also, beautiful copies of gold sculptures from Kartoceto in Pergola, better known as "golden bronzes", are also popular among visitors.
