Photo and description

Castelleone di Suaza is a small town in the province of Ancona in the Italian region of Marche, famous for the nearby archaeological park of Suaza with the ruins of an ancient Roman city. The city, which stands on a hill on the banks of the Cesano River, is also often called the “green city” because of its many flower greenhouses and nurseries. Just behind the medieval castle are the ruins of the very ancient city of Suaz, which was once located along one of the branches of the ancient Roman road Via Flaminia, which went to the port of Senigallia. Since 1987, the Archaeological Department of the Marche region began a program to carry out excavations in the territory of Suaze, during which they discovered cobbled streets, a trading forum, two necropolises, an amphitheater and two patrician houses. All these ruins were included in the archaeological park in the Pian Volpello Valley.

Other attractions in Castellone di Suazy include the Palazzo Compiano Della Rovere, located in the historic center of the city, distinguished by its beautiful 16th century portal and graceful courtyard. Today within the walls of the Palazzo is an archaeological museum. Also worth seeing are the churches of San Pietro and San Paolo from the second half of the 16th century and the small chapel of San Martino outside the city. In the latter one can see the early works of the artist Ercole Ramazzini.

Once upon a time, the cultivation of onions was one of the main sectors of the economy of Castellone di Suaza - the inhabitants of the city were even called “onions”. And today, the colorful Onion Festival is held here every year - Festa della Cipolla: in the first week of September in the city you can taste a huge number of dishes prepared using this specific vegetable. An equally important holiday is the religious Feast of Leaving, celebrated in spring.
