Photo and description

The Adam Mickiewicz Literary Museum is a museum of the Polish poet and political publicist located in Warsaw. The mission of the museum is to collect and store cultural heritage, as well as to promote literature, science and culture.

The idea of creating the Adam Mickiewicz Museum appeared in 1948, when an exhibition was organized in the National Museum of Warsaw in honor of the 150th anniversary of birthday of the poet. The initiator was the bibliophile and author of books about Mitskevich - Alexander Semkovich.

Two historical buildings on the Old Square were allocated for the museum, which in two years were adapted to the needs of the exhibition hall. The grand opening of the museum took place in 1952. The collection was collected gradually: valuable manuscripts, documents, portraits and memorabilia came to Warsaw from different countries. The collection of the exposition was attended by the poet's family, collectors and connoisseurs.

In 1962, the museum was expanded and occupied two more neighboring buildings. At this time, the museum became a kind of literary salon in Warsaw. In April 1972, Janusz Odrovac-Pienizek became the director, who held this position until December 2009.

In 1974, the poet's youngest son, Joseph Mitskevich, donated memorabilia and home archives to the museum. In 1978, the collection was supplemented by the eldest daughter of Adam Mickiewicz, Maria.

The Literary Museum cooperates with museums in other countries, which makes it possible to arrange temporary traveling exhibitions, telling about the Polish literary heritage outside the country. The Literary Museum is a member of the International Committee of World Museums ICLM.
