Previously, the city was the Arab capital, and the Arab past can still be seen in the architecture of the city. The city is also famous for its ancient churches and other architectural monuments. Among these monuments is the Gallery Palace, built in the 16th century. In 1746, it was bought by Judge Joao Leal da Gama Ataide. After becoming the owner of the mansion, the judge hired the most famous architect in the Algarve at the time, Doigo Tavares de Ataide, to renovate the palace. Doigo Tavares de Ataide is considered one of the most influential 18th century painters and architects in the Algarve. Many buildings in the Algarve, namely in the cities of Faro and Tavira, were designed by this architect. After the reconstruction, the palace became one of the most attractive buildings in the city. Attention is drawn to the original natural stone masonry in the Baroque style and the windows on the second floor. Today the Gallery Palace belongs to the city. After the reconstruction of the building in 2001, the Municipal Museum was opened in the palace. The museum building has two auditoriums, exhibition halls; the museum often hosts various city cultural events and temporary exhibitions.
