Photo and description

In terms of architecture, the Church of Mercy in Tavira is considered one of the most magnificent examples of the Renaissance in the Algarve and one of the most beautiful temples in the city. The city of Tavira is sometimes called "the city of churches", at the moment there are 21 churches in the city and each can be called a masterpiece.

The Church of Mercy was built in the 16th century and is located next to the Romanesque bridge. The construction of the church began in 1540 and lasted a long time. The work was supervised by the famous architect of Tavira - Andre Pilarte, who built the Jeronimos Monastery in Lisbon, still well-known to all. The doorway of the building is decorated with the image of the Virgin Mary of Mercy, supported by two angels, as well as images of the apostles Peter and Paul. On both sides of it you can see the symbol of the royal crown and the coat of arms of the city.

The church has three naves, which are supported by columns decorated with grotesque images. The main altar of the 18th century inside the church attracts attention. The carved gilded altar is decorated with images of St. Elizabeth and the Virgin Mary. In one of the chapels, which are located on the sides, there is a painting of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The walls inside the temple are decorated with panels of azulesos tiles, which depict images of saints, & nbsp; biblical scenes, scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. In the sacristy there is a cross with a Crucifix, which dates back to the 16th century. A small covered gallery adjoins the church.
