Photo and Description

Although the Cismigiu Garden was opened to the public in 1845, its history dates back to the late 18th century. Then the ruler Alexander Ypsilanti ordered the construction of two fountains. One of them is still in the garden.

The initiative for the creation belongs to the Russian general Pavel Kiselev, who after the end of the Russian-Turkish war was the head of the Russian administration of Romania. Count Kiselev paid a lot of attention to the development and improvement of Bucharest. It was he who figured out how to ennoble the swampy outskirts of the capital. Drainage work began in 1830. Ten years later, the invited Austrian landscape designer Wilhelm Mayer set about creating an exquisite garden on the prepared territory. They were faced with an ambitious task - to collect the flora of all Romania in the future garden. The work continued after the official opening of the garden.

Now this old city park is located in the very center of Bucharest. And it is difficult to imagine that once it was a marginal swamp with mosquitoes and water birds. Birds swim even today - on the numerous artificial lakes that the garden is rich in. These lakes, with thrown bridges, create the effect of the volume of the park area. The largest of them, also Cishmigiu, turns into the largest ice skating rink in the capital in winter.

The garden is decorated in the style of English park art - with picturesque alleys, terraces and fountains, and various landscape compositions. Its special attraction is the "Roman circle" - a platform where sculptures of famous Romanian writers and cultural figures are collected. In another way, it is also called the "Rotunda of Writers".

More than 30 thousand species of plants brought from all regions of Romania decorate the garden. Therefore, the townspeople chose this place for the annual competition of masters of flower arrangements.

The Cismigiu Garden fits perfectly into the center of a modern metropolis. Today, it is not only a picturesque landmark, but one of the favorite vacation spots of its residents.
