Photo and description
The Klagenfurt Film Museum, housed in a former radio station, is dedicated to the history of one of the most interesting forms of art - cinema. It was founded in the mid-1990s at the initiative of the University of Oldenburg, which researched the development of cinema in Klagenfurt. A website has been running since 1997, where you can see documents illustrating the early days of cinema in Carinthia. The first film, which in Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia, was called "a demonstration of vivid photographs", was shown here on November 19, 1896, 11 months after the first public screening of the film by the Lumiere brothers in Paris.
In 2007, the collection of the Cinema Museum was transported to an abandoned building on the banks of the Lend Canal, where the radio station used to be. In addition to the Museum of Cinema, the Museum of Transport has also settled there. In the same year, these institutions held a joint exhibition "On the tram to the origins of cinema."
The Film Museum in Klagenfurt is famous for the fact that every year the subject of the exposition changes. Thus, this museum can be visited every year and be sure that you will be shown something new. In the Museum of Cinema, you can see materials that tell about the history of cinema in a single Carinthian city. There are exhibits here that remind you of all the old cinemas in Klagenfurt, and there were eight of them. Part of the exhibition is devoted to films that were filmed in the city or in its vicinity. Jeanne Moreau, Sylvanas Mangano, Omar Sharif, Ingrid Bergman worked here at one time. Michael Haneke in 1976 filmed here one of his first television films, Three Routes to the Sea. In the Museum of Cinema, you can find old posters that adorned information stands in front of cinemas, photographs of actors, tickets for shows, sets and props used in filming films, personal belongings of actors and much more.
