Photo and description
One of the most beautiful old buildings in the city of Lutsk is the House of Kosachs, located in the historical and cultural reserve "Old Lutsk" at 23 Dragomanova Street.
The Kosach House was erected at the end of the XVIII century. next to the castle of Lubart and belonged to the buildings of the church of the holy apostles Peter and Paul. In this house in 1890-1891. the Kosach family lived. These were the last years of L. Ukrainka's stay in the city, which by that time was already seriously ill. The Kosachs got the house after it was nationalized by the city housing commission.
In the 70s of the XIX century. the hall on the second floor of the House of Kosachs was rented by a private drama theater. In 1917, a Polish gymnasium named after I. Kosciuszko, which became state-owned in 1921. Subsequently, the administration of the Lutsk Roman Catholic Diocese was located here.
After World War II, this house housed various regional and city organizations, as well as excursion and travel agencies. Some time after the creation of the State Historical and Cultural Reserve, the house was transferred to its management.
The Kosach House is located on the site where there was once a moat along the Okolny Castle. Throughout its life, the house literally cracked and sagged, as a trickle flowed in its basement. In the foundations of the building, arches were made through which in ancient times water flowed to Glushts. In the left wing of the house there was a study and a public reception of P. Kosach, and in the right wing there were living rooms.
After numerous restorations and repairs, this beautiful two-storey building with an openwork cast-iron balcony was radically changed, but, despite these changes, it still managed to maintain its architectural appearance. In 2007, the Lesina Lounge Museum was opened in the Kosachs' house. It also houses the office of the Historical and Cultural Reserve "Old Town".
Today the House of Kosachs is the cultural and educational center of the city of Lutsk.
