Moscow Drama Theater. N.V. Gogol is located on Kazakov Street (near the Kurskaya metro station). The theater was founded in 1925. The initiator of its creation was the Central Committee of the Railway Workers' Trade Union. The theater was originally called the Moscow Traveling Theater of Drama and Comedy. The head of the theater was Kirill Golovanov.

It was one of the first drama theaters of the Soviet era. The troupe worked both permanently and on tour. The theater made trips to the most remote regions of the country. The performances were played in railway depots, workshops and clubs. The theater staff promoted theatrical art, carried out cultural and educational work. Its spectators were railway workers and workers of transport and other enterprises in Moscow. These were collective performances-concerts, which included performances by artists in different genres. Basically they were of an agitational and journalistic nature.

In 1930, the theater became subordinate to the Glavischusstva of the RSFSR People's Commissariat for Education. In 1931, the theater was completely transferred to the Central Committee of the trade union of railway workers. It became known as the "Moscow Theater of Transport" at the Central Committee of Railways.

In 1934, actors from the Moscow Art Theater came to the leadership of the theater. Vladimir Gotovtsev, Ivan Bersenev and Serafima Birman determined the entire further development of the theater, laying the traditions of realistic theater.

In 1939, the theater was renamed the Central Theater of Transport. People's Artist of the RSFSR Nikolai Petrov became the main director of the theater. The theater under his leadership toured the country a lot. From 1941 to 1943, the theater visited the Trans-Baikal Military District and Mongolia.

In 1943 the theater received its permanent premises in Moscow, on Kazakov Street. The building was a pre-revolutionary building that was once a railway depot. In 1925 it was turned into a club. In 1930, it housed a theater.

In 1948, People's Artist of the RSFSR Ilya Sudakov came to the theater and headed it. In 1958, Pyotr Vasiliev, Honored Artist of the RSFSR, became the chief director. In 1959 the theater got its current name. In 1979, the theater got a Small Stage. Since August 2012, the theater has been headed by the director of theater and cinema - Kirill Serebrennikov.

At various times such famous artists as Leonid Utesov, Boris Chirkov, Alexey Krasnopolsky, Viktor Khokhryakov, Vladimir Samoilov worked in the theater.

On the stage of the theater, plays are staged based on the works of Nikolai Gogol, Alexander Ostrovsky, Somerset Maugham, Andrei Platonov, Oscar Wilde, Louis Verneuil. Among the most famous performances: "Taras Bulba", "And this one fell out of the nest", "Theatrical novel", "Portrait".
