Photo and description

The Intercession Cathedral is the oldest surviving building in the city. It was built in 1689 and is a baroque three-domed church, set on a warm winter church typical of Russian church architecture. The upper, cold church is surrounded by a gallery and was united by a "gulbisch" with a hipped bell tower. Patterned brick platbands coexist with multi-profile cornices with a small offset, the belt of rectangular depressions is complemented by images of the sun. The harmony of the volumes growing from each other, easily rising up, is adjacent to the severe, heavy forms of the bell tower, reminiscent of a fortress tower.

During the Great Patriotic War, the building was badly damaged. In the early 90s, the restoration of the cathedral began, and at present it has been transferred to the disposal of the Kharkiv church diocese. Now there is a functioning Orthodox church.
