The title in English is Forte Mare. Photo and descriptionOne of the four fortresses of the Old Town district in Herceg Novi is called Marine, or Forte Mare. According to local guides, this powerful stronghold was built in the XIV century, and later rebuilt more than once. The most serious changes in its appearance were made by the Ottoman conquerors, who ruled the city for about 200 years. The fortress in those days was used for its intended purpose, that is, it served to protect the city. Cannons were installed on its fortress walls, which acquired characteristic battlements. Then the building on the seashore was called "Yaka Kula", which in translation meant "powerful castle" - and it fully corresponded to reality. For the modern name of the fortress, local residents should thank the Venetians, who ruled Herceg Novi immediately after the Ottomans - from 1687 to 1797. Finally, during the rule of Austria-Hungary (XIX century), Forte Mare acquired its present form. All the owners who have ever owned the fortress changed it, arranging secret passages, creating new stairs and passageways. The largest reconstruction of the Sea Fortress took place in 1833. In the middle of the XX century, the need to protect the urban area disappeared, so the fortress was converted into a summer cinema. Later, the Forte Mare space was adapted for various celebrations and festive concerts. In the evenings, discos were organized here, at which the youth of the whole city gathered. At present, everyone can climb the walls of the Sea Fortress. From there a wonderful panorama of the city and Boka Kotorska bay opens.
