Photo and description

On October 8, 1934, the city authorities officially supported the idea of Karel Shkorpil, director of the Archaeological Museum of the city of Varna, to turn the empty territory near the Asparuhov Rampart into a park, and to erect two monuments on the top of the rampart: the first - dedicated to warriors, the second is a bust of Khan Asparukh.

Work under the leadership of the mayor Stancho Stanev on the improvement of the territory began in November of the same year. Many residents of the city soon joined them, including students, soldiers, representatives of sports clubs and others. Responsibility for landscaping the new park was assigned to Atanas Savov, an outstanding specialist in this field.

As a result of the works of 1934-1935, alleys intended for walking and recreation were equipped, along which acacias were planted, poplars and other vegetation. At the beginning of 1935, a gate appeared at the entrance to the park, and a pedestal with a bust of Khan Asparukh was erected a hundred meters away, at the foot of the rampart. At the top of the hill, an imposing figure of an Asparuh warrior in military attire was installed, with a weapon in one hand and a shield in the other. The author of both works was the Varna sculptor Kirill Georgiev. There is a column near the pedestal, found by the Shkorpil brothers as a result of archaeological excavations in 1914.

The grand opening of the park took place on August 3, 1935. It soon became popular with the locals. Today Asparuhov Park is a great place for leisure, recreation and walks. There are benches along the paved paths. Illumination is switched on in the park at night.
