The Balchik Historical Museum was opened in 1937, the building of the museum is located next to the city ethnographic museum. The exposition was based on artifacts found by Karel Sheopil, an experienced archaeologist, in 1907.

The life of the museum can be divided into two stages: until 1940, while Balchik was under Romanian occupation, and after, when most of the exhibits were evacuated to Romania. Today, the museum exhibits finds collected after 1940.

In the historical museum, you can see most of the archaeological finds that scientists discovered during work in the area. Thanks to the exhibits, it can be argued that the creation and development of the city began in antiquity and continued in the Middle Ages.

In addition, the museum contains finds from the temple of Cybele (3rd millennium BC), which was buried underground due to an earthquake in the 6th century. The ruins of the temple were discovered only in 2007. The temple has well preserved marble statues, which are also exhibited in the museum. Among the fragments of the sanctuary, 27 inscriptions were deciphered and images dedicated to the goddess Cybele were restored. Today everyone can visit this object, however, the remains of the temple have not yet been transferred to a full-fledged museum - it has remained in a deep foundation pit.

An exposition dedicated to new history presents documents and photographs related to the period of the Romanian occupation Balchik and South Dobrudja.
