Photo and description

One of the most interesting museums on Santorini is the Lignos Museum of Folk Art in Kontohori (a suburb of Fira).

The museum was created in the early 70s 20th century on the initiative and with the financial support of a lawyer, journalist and editor of the local newspaper "Fira Novosti", Mr. Emmanuel Lignos, after whom he, in fact, later got its name. As a home for the future museum, so that its visitors could fully experience the unique flavor of the famous Greek island, the so-called "cave house", typical of Santorini, was chosen, given its natural landscapes. Today, the Museum of Folk Art is a whole complex with an impressive system of structures carved into the rocks, a cozy spacious courtyard, the chapel of Agios Konstantinos, as well as a new building, erected already in 1993.

The Lignos Folk Art Museum is a great opportunity to get acquainted with the history of cultural development, local traditions, as well as the peculiarities of life and life of the inhabitants of Santorini on the 19th - 20th centuries. In addition to the living quarters, where you can admire antique furniture, textiles, decor items and various utensils, the old winery with a wine cellar is also available for visiting the museum guests. Of particular interest are also workshops, where you will learn about the intricacies of some of the popular crafts on the island in the past centuries, a traditional coffee shop and an art gallery with a very good collection of works of talented Greek artists.

There is an excellent library in the Museum of Folk Art.
