Description, photos and a map showing the nearest significant objects. Photo and descriptionIn the famous town of Velikiye Luki, on one of the banks of the Lovat River, not far from the fortress, there is a large sculptural monument dedicated to the Hero of the Soviet Union - Alexander Matrosov. The opening of the monument took place in the summer of July 5, 1954. The authors of this project are the famous architect Artomonov V.A. and sculptor E.V. Vuchetich The monument is located on a large square named after the Hero. Judging by the official version, Alexander Matveevich Matrosov was born on February 5, 1924 in the small town of Dnepropetrovsk (at that time it was called Yekaterinoslav). As a child, young Sasha was left without parents and was brought up in the Melekessky and Ivanovsky orphanages, which are located in the Ulyanovsk region. After Alexander finished seven years of school, he went to work as an assistant teacher in a labor colony in the city of Ufa. According to the second version, the real name of Alexander Matrosov is Mukhamedyanov Shakiryan Yunusovich and he was born in Bashkiria in the village of Kunakbaevo. If you believe this information, then he took the name of Matrosov, since he became a homeless child after running away from home due to his father's new marriage, and decided to enroll under this name in an orphanage. It is worth noting that Matrosov called himself only Matrosov. Since September 1942, Alexander began his studies at the Krasnokholmsk infantry school, and shortly after starting his studies, in January 1943, the cadets were sent to the war on the Kalinin front. Here Matrosov served in the second rifle battalion of the 91st separate volunteer Siberian brigade named after Stalin. After some time, Matrosov moved to the 254th rifle regiment. In the winter of February 27, 1943, an order was received from the second battalion to attack a strong point in the area of the village of Chernushki. The task was taken for execution. At that moment, when the Soviet soldiers crossed the forest and went out to the forest edge, the incessant machine-gun fire of German opponents began to shoot at them, while three machine guns completely covered any approaches to the small village. One of the machine guns was able to suppress an assault group of armor-piercing and submachine gunners. The second bunker was taken over by a different composition of armor-piercers. The machine gun from the third bunker continued firing at the hollow in front of the village. All attempts to make him stop firing have not ended in success. Then two privates crept towards the bunker - Sailors and Ogurtsov. Soon Ogurtsov was seriously wounded and Matrosov decided to act independently: he crawled to the embrasure on the flank side and threw two grenades, after which the machine gun fell silent. Immediately, as soon as the Soviet fighters rose to attack, the machine gun began to fire again. At that moment Matrosov got up and jerked to the bunker, covering the embrasure with his body. Thanks to the feat of Alexander Matrosov, who gave his life, Soviet soldiers were able to fulfill their task. The feat of Alexander Matrosov became a symbol of military valor and courage, as well as fearlessness and true love for the Motherland. On June 19, 1943, Alexander Matrosov was awarded the title of Hero of the Soviet Union posthumously. When planning the construction of the monument, it was decided to build it on the grave of Alexander Matveevich Matrosov. The existing remains were transported to Velikiye Luki from a small village called Chernushki, where Matrosov performed his significant immortal feat. The statue of Alexander Matrosov is made of bronze and stands on a granite pedestal. The height of the pedestal is 4.32 meters, and the height of the statue itself is 4.2 meters. Directly on the monument there is a memorial inscription, which says that Private Alexander Matrosov, whose years of life are 1924-1943, on February 23, 1943, at the fierce and decisive moment of the battle with the German invaders for the right to seize the village of Chernushki, sacrificed his life, which he provided significant success of the advancing unit. Works of fine art, literature and a feature film were dedicated to the famous hero.
