Photo and description

The longest river in Montenegro is the Tara, its length is 144 kilometers. The length of the gorge along the Tara River reaches 80 kilometers in length and 1300 meters in depth. This canyon is considered the deepest in Europe. Among the world's canyons, it is second only to the Grand Canyon, which is located in the USA.

Tara Canyon is surrounded on one side by the Durmitor and Sinyaevina mountains, and on the other side the canyon is sandwiched between the Zlatni Bor and Lyubishnya mountains. Thus, the canyon is part of the Durmitor National Montenegrin Park. It was this area of the canyon, together with the park, that was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1980. And in 1937, the Djurdzhevich Bridge was erected across the famous canyon of the deep-water Tara River. For a long time this was the only road connecting the north and south of Montenegro.

Tara is the largest European reservoir of clean drinking water, which can be drunk immediately without resorting to preliminary purification. Several rivers that flow into the Tara are also famous for their canyons. Among them are the canyons of such rivers as Sushitsa, Vashkovska, Draga.

The water in the river is saturated with oxygen, which causes its color to change from a rich emerald green to a sparkling foamy white. The average water temperature in the river is not higher than 11 ° C.

The flora and fauna in the Tara river valley is rich in various types of trees. Among others, such rare species as black pine, black ash, oriental hornbeam, linden and elm grow here. If you go higher up the slope, you can see cork oaks, hornbeams, maples and beeches on the rocks. Having crossed the line of 1000 meters, spruce and fir grow on the territory. Also a unique attraction of the Tara river valley is the virgin forest of the Black Pine, which is still preserved in European territory. The trees here are unusually tall (some pines have grown up to 50 meters), their age reaches about 400 years. The coastal forests are rich in predators - brown bears and wolves, and about 130 different species of birds live in the valley.

In addition, the river valley houses ancient monasteries: Dovoliy, Dobrilovina and the monastery of St. Archangel Michael of the 13th century. It is famous for the altar of Mithras, the Phoenician god associated with friendliness, harmony and the light of the sun.
