Photo and description

The Monastery of San Marco was founded at the beginning of the 12th century. In 1437 the monastery was given to the Dominican order. The reconstruction of the entire ensemble was carried out under the supervision of the architect Michelozzo, who built the cells and cloisters, later decorated by the Florentine artist and Dominican monk Fra Beato Angelico with frescoes on religious subjects. Here, Savonarola lived in one of the cells, the Greek Mikhail Trivolis studied theology, who later arrived in Moscow and became famous as Maxim the Greek. In 1866 the monastery was closed and now there is the Museum of the Monastery of San Marco.

Most of the frescoes in the cloister of St. Antonio belong to the brush of Bernardino Poccetti, who depicted scenes from the life of St. Anthony. The corner panels are painted by Fra Angelico. In the Ospizio Hall (pilgrim's shelter) there is Fra Angelico's altarpiece Descent from the Cross. The vaulted Chamber of the Chapter is decorated with frescoes by Fra Angelico `` The Crucifixion '' and " St. Dominic. '' In the small refectory, one wall is completely occupied by Ghirlandaio's fresco The Last Supper. Here is also the famous `` Annunciation '' Fra Angelico.
