Photo and description

This temple shared the fate of many Russian churches and cathedrals: in 1929 it was withdrawn from the Church and adapted as a warehouse and production facility. Over the years of off-label use, the temple was destroyed, and its restoration began only in the 90s, when the church again became the temple of God.

The Church of St. Alexis in Rogozhskaya Sloboda is located on Nikoloyamskaya Street. The temple bears the name of the Metropolitan of Moscow Alexy, who lived in the 13th century and was considered the miracle worker of All Russia. The Metropolitan was canonized just half a century after his death, his relics were kept in different churches in Moscow and in 1947 were transferred to the Yelokhovsky Epiphany Cathedral.

The first wooden church was built on this site in 1625, the second (brick) building was erected at the very beginning of the 18th century. The current building was built in the middle of the 18th century by the will of the inhabitants of the Rogozhskaya Sloboda. The architect of this building is probably Dmitry Ukhtomsky, who chose the mature baroque style for the church.

In the best times, the temple was richly decorated from the inside, it kept several icons created by Novgorod masters and dating back to the 15th-16th centuries. In the second half of the 18th century, the walls were painted.

After the revolution, church utensils were withdrawn, and the building was partially destroyed, in particular, only two lower tiers of the bell tower survived. Currently, the building of the church is assigned to the temple of St. Sergius of Radonezh in the Rogozhskaya Sloboda. Restoration work is underway in the Church of St. Alexis.
