Photo and description

Risan is an old town in Montenegro. This is the oldest settlement of Boka Kotorska. The first mention of it dates back to the 4th century BC, then it was the main capital and the main fortress of the Illyrian state, ruled by Queen Teuta, here she hid during the wars. The divine patron of the city was Medaurus, he was portrayed as a horseman with a spear.

By the time of the beginning of our era, the city was in the power of the Romans, they gave it a new name: Risinum. This period of Roman rule saw the city's greatest flourishing. Five Roman mosaics have survived to this day, becoming the most significant traces left by the ancient Roman rule in all of Montenegro.

One mosaic, which is the best preserved, depicts the Greek god of sleep Hypnos. This image is the only one of its kind in the Balkans and one of the few ancient landmarks in the city.

During the Middle Ages, Risan loses its former glory. The Avar and Slavic tribes invading the territory ruined the city. The last time the bishop of Risan was mentioned in the chronicles dated to 595.

In the 10th century Risan became a city of the Serbian principality of Travunia, the emperor of Byzantium Constantine Porphyrogenitus writes about this. By the middle of the 15th century, mentions appear that the city belongs to Duke Stefan Vuksic. In 1482, a large Ottoman army conquered many territories, including Risan. And only in 1688 Risan became the jurisdiction of the Venetian Republic, part of the province of "Albania Veneta" and receives the Italian name Risano. The domination of Venice lasted until 1797, then the French and Austrians ruled it for a short time, and finally the city became part of Yugoslavia and was there until its collapse. Today it is a part of independent Montenegro.

At present, the population of the city of Risan cannot be called numerous - it is just over two thousand people, but there is a tendency to constant growth. Tourists and guests are met by the Risan port, there are hotels in the city. Risan is known for its specialized neurosurgery center and a medical institution for the treatment of orthopedic diseases called "Vaso Chukovic". There are practically no medieval buildings in Risan, only the ancestral palace of the Ivelichi, the Russian count family, which originates from these places, has survived.
