Photo and description

Perast is located a few kilometers northwest of Kotor. It is a city with an ancient and fascinating history. The first written records of Perast date back to 1326. It is believed that the first inhabitants of the city were pirates.

Since 1420, Perast was ruled by the Venetians, whose rule continued until the collapse of the Venetian Republic in 1797. Over the centuries of the republic's rule, the city was built up with churches, palaces, fortifications. Local navigation was also actively developed.

After the collapse of the republic, the rule over Perast passed from one invader to another, but since 1918 the city was included in the state of Serbs, Slovenes and Croats. Modern Perast belongs to Montenegro.

A feature of the city is the fact that, despite its coastal location, Perast was practically not affected by earthquakes - all the architectural structures of the XV-XVIII centuries have been perfectly preserved to this day.

Among the many ancient churches, the temple of St. Nicholas stands alone located on the square of the same name. The church was built in 1616. The seemingly modest facade conceals a majestic and lush interior decoration. Wooden ceiling, baroque marble altars and paintings by artist Tripo Kokolya.

Next to the church of St. Nicholas, you can see a 55-meter bell tower, erected in 1691. To this day, it is crowned with bells brought from Venice in 1730.
