Photo and description

Golling Castle rises above the valley of the Salzach River at an altitude of 469 meters above sea level. It is located 25 kilometers from the Austrian city of Salzburg. This area, known as Tennengau, has been of great strategic importance since the Bronze Age. It is possible that the first defensive settlements on the top of this hill appeared in the days of Roman rule, especially considering the fact that the famous ancient Roman tract passed nearby. In any case, the modern castle is built on an old wooden foundation.

By Austrian standards, Golling Castle is quite large. Moreover, it has been perfectly preserved since the 13th century - it was then that it was erected in its form that has survived to this day. It is a massive defensive structure, consisting of three floors and bordered on both sides by towers of irregular shape. Slightly lower, closer to the foot of the hill, there is a small castle chapel with an outstanding pointed spire.

It is known that in 1325 the castle belonged to the local knights of the Kuhler, but soon it was bought by the powerful archbishops of Salzburg. It is interesting that only in 1722 the chambers of the archbishops were finally equipped with a decent heating system.

In 1971, due to the increased flow of tourists, Golling Castle was converted into a museum. Surprisingly, this museum is dedicated not only to the history of the fortress, which would seem to be expected, but also to the numerous archaeological excavations that have ever been carried out in this region. The museum displays a variety of fossils, fossils and other curious finds. Also in the vicinity of Golling Castle there are all kinds of summer festivals.
