In the same year, the foundation of the future monastery was laid. In the 6th century, its construction was completed, but its construction has not survived to this day. The buildings that have survived to this day were built from the 13th to the 14th century. The coronations of the august persons of the Trebizond Empire took place in the Panagia-Sumela monastery. The monastery has been famous for its treasury for many centuries. But in 1923 the monastery was plundered, and the valuables from it were transported to Greece. After a period of decline and abandonment, which lasted until 1996, the Panagia-Sumela monastery was reconstructed and restored. The monastery complex has become the largest historical and cultural attraction located near the city of Trabzon. Inside the monastery you can see original interiors, as well as ancient frescoes dating back to the XIV-XV centuries.
