Description, photographs and a map showing the nearest significant objects. The name in English is Monastery Panagia Kechria. Photo and descriptionAmong the numerous temples on the Greek island of Skiathos, the Panagia Kehria Monastery certainly deserves special attention. It is located in the northwestern part of the island, about 8 km from the administrative center of the island, Skiathos, and is an important historical and architectural monument of the post-Byzantine period. Today Panagia Kehriya Monastery is under the jurisdiction of the 7th Department of Byzantine Antiquities. The Panagia Kehriya Monastery is dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The temple is located on a picturesque hill overgrown with pines and olive trees, from the top of which there are excellent panoramic views of the endless expanses of the Aegean Sea and the Kehriya Bay. Actually, the road leading to the holy monastery starts from the Kehriya beach. Unfortunately, to this day, only the main catholicon has survived from the monastery complex. The monastery as we see it today was built in the 18th century on the site of an older temple, presumably dating back to the 16th century. The interior of the temple is replete with fairly well-preserved ancient frescoes, which are of high artistic and historical value. The carved wooden iconostasis is also very interesting. Today the Panagia Kehriya monastery is one of the main attractions of the island of Skiathos. Despite some "isolation" and a somewhat tedious climb up the mountain, which will undoubtedly be brightened up by the magnificent landscapes and the unusually relaxing and cozy atmosphere of the ancient temple, it is especially popular with tourists.
