Photo and description

The construction of the Church of the Virgin Mary in the early Gothic style was started under King Bela IV (1255–1269). Its northern bell tower dates back to this period. Under Lajos I the Great, the southern gate, the so-called Mary's gate, was built, later, under Sigismund and Matyash, who got married twice in this church (therefore the church is most often called the Matyash church.), A southern bell tower with a coat of arms depicting a crow was added. In Turkish times, it was used as a mosque.

The frescoes in the Matyash Church were made by Bertalan Szekei and Karoi Lotz. The Loreto Chapel houses a legendary 16th century Madonna marble sculpture. In the chapel of the Holy Trinity in 1862, in a richly decorated sarcophagus, the remains of Bela III and his wife Anna Chatillon, found in 1848 in Szekesfehervar, were buried. In the lower church and in the gallery, you can see exhibits introducing church art. The church has excellent acoustics and organ concerts are often held here.
