Photo and description

Castello del Boccale is a large castle in Livorno, located in the south of the Antignano quarter on the coastal road to Quercianella. The castle got its name due to the fact that the local coast is known as Boccale (Pitcher) or Cala dei Pirati (Pirates Bay).

The core of today's Castello del Boccale was an observation tower built by the Medici in the 16th century, possibly on the ruins of an older structure from the Leaning Republic period. The watchman and several soldiers lived on the tower, but there was absolutely no place on it for placing artillery.

At the end of the 19th century, the tower became the property of the Marquise Eleanor Ugolini and was “inscribed” in a medieval-style residence with many battlements. Subsequently, the castle passed to the Whitaker-Ingham family, which at the beginning of the 20th century removed the battlements, replacing them with a conventional sloping roof. Castello del Boccale has recently been renovated and divided into several residential apartments. And in the surrounding park, a small tower was restored, which housed a warehouse. The castle of Castello Sonnino and the Torre di Calafuria tower are nearby.

Castello del Boccale consists of a rectangular main building surrounded by three small round turrets. On the facade closest to the sea, there is an old tower with windows.
