Photo and description

Fiskardo is a picturesque Greek town located on the northern coast of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian islands, about 32 km from Argostoli. The name of Fiskardo is also the bay in which this small port city is located. During the summer months, the city's harbor is home to many boats, including luxury yachts and fishing boats. There is also a regular ferry service to the islands of Ithaca and Lefkada.

Probably, on the territory of modern Fiskardo in ancient times there was the city of Panormos mentioned in the 5th century BC. Greek historian Herodotus. This assumption is confirmed by some finds discovered in 2005 during the construction of a shopping complex near the city harbor. And at the end of 2006, during the construction of the hotel, large graves from the Roman era were discovered. Among the valuable artifacts were many gold jewelry, ceramics, glass and bronze products, coins and much more. Not far from the burial, a well-preserved theater, the remains of a residential building, and Roman baths were excavated. The discovered buildings and historical relics date back to 146 BC. - 330 A.D. The city received its modern name "Fiskardo" during the Frankish domination. It is known that in the 18th century, the city's harbor was of great economic importance.

Fiskardo is one of the few settlements on the island that remained practically intact after the devastating earthquake in 1953. And today we can see here many perfectly preserved Venetian structures, which create a unique atmosphere and flavor of the Mediterranean town. There are many excellent restaurants and cafes along the waterfront. Here you can not only relax and enjoy excellent Greek cuisine, but also admire the beautiful panoramic views of the neighboring island of Ithaca and the snow-white yachts in the port. There are excellent pebble beaches with crystal clear waters near the city.
