These settlements are a unique complex that includes underground cities and cave monasteries. These settlements were created for several centuries, starting from the first millennium BC.

Settlements in this area arose for a number of reasons. Firstly, the local rocks are composed of tuff, which is very easy to work, as it is soft, but when it comes into contact with fresh air, it hardens quickly enough. Since there are no trees on the territory of Cappadocia, houses in the rocks were the best solution.

Another reason – these are frequent wars in the region. In cave and underground houses, it was most convenient to hide from numerous conquerors and oppressors.   The cave settlements of Cappadocia were also used as their refuge by Christians persecuted by Muslims of the first centuries of Christianity.

Underground cities began to be found in the 19th century. Now   6 cities have already been found: Mazy, Tatlarin, Ajigol, Ozkonak, Derinkuyu and Kaymakli.
