Sinop is the oldest city in Anatolia. The old city walls and towers were erected in the 7th century BC to protect against attacks. In the course of the city's centuries-old history, the walls and towers have undergone a number of destruction and reconstruction.

The fortifications created under the Pontic king Mithridates VI Evpator, who reigned from 132 to 63 BC, have survived to this day. The length of these fortifications is 2050 meters, and the height – 25 meters.
