Rating: 7,6/10 (101 votes)  The Cathedral Church of Christ and the Virgin Mary (Rochester Cathedral) is a Romanesque church in Rochester, UK. This diocese is the second oldest in the country, older - only in the city of Canterbury. The construction of the cathedral began in 1080.
The Diocese of Rochester was founded by Justus, one of the missionaries who accompanied St. Augustine of Canterbury, who converted paganism to Christianity in the 7th century. Justus, as the first bishop of Rochester, was given royal permission to build a temple in the city. Secular priests who studied at the cathedral and served it. In 676, the city suffered significant damage from Mercia and the Vikings. Rochester Cathedral stands out, among other things, for its bells. There are ten of them and they are collected in a ring. All of them were cast after the First World War, some as memorials to those killed. The largest and heaviest bell weighs over thirty quintals.
