Elizabeth Castle in the UK, Jersey Island Resort
Rating: 8,4/10 (2523 votes)  Elizabeth Castle is an ancient castle located on a miniature rocky islet near the island of Jersey. At low tide, it can be reached on foot, and at high tide, it can be reached by the castle ferry.
The castle was built at the end of the 16th century. Island Governor Walter Reilly named the new castle in honor of Queen Elizabeth"Fort Isabella Bellissima". The governor's residence was moved from the castle of Mont Orgueil to the new castle.
Elizabeth Castle was actively used during the Civil War for military purposes. King James I spent some time here, who was proclaimed king by the governor, despite the fact that the monarchy in Great Britain at that time was abolished. In 1651, parliamentary troops arrived on the island of Jersey. At the same time, an old church was destroyed, in which food ammunition was stored. The castle was forced to surrender.
In the 19th century, a project was developed for the reconstruction of the harbor, which included the unification of the castle with the coast. The project was never implemented, but the islet where the castle is located is connected by a breakwater to the Hermit's Rock on the Isle of Man. Hermit's Rock is the home of St. Helier, the patron saint of Jersey.
