Various fortified structures have existed here since ancient times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological studies of the area. The castle was built in 1204 after the division of the Duchy of Normandy. The first written mentions of it date back to 1212. The castle of Mont Orgueil securely guarded the island until it was damaged by artillery.
At the end of the 16th century, there was a threat to demolish the castle of Mont Orgueil, in connection with the construction of the castle of Elizabeth, which took over the main defensive functions. Governor Walter Reilly forbade the demolition of Mont Orgueil Castle. For a long time the fortress was used as a prison. Political criminals were imprisoned here.
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert visited the castle in 1846. In the 20th century, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II visited it. In 1907, the castle was transferred to the ownership of the Jersey people, and a museum was equipped there. During the occupation of the island by German troops during the Second World War, modern fortifications were built in the castle, disguised as old masonry.
Today Mont Orgueil Castle is one of the main attractions of the island of Jersey. The castle hosts historical reenactments, fancy-dress parties, medieval jugglers and theatrical performances.
