St. James Church is one of the oldest churches in Hamburg. The church was built in 1255. Over the course of two centuries, the building was rebuilt several times. The temple acquired its present appearance in the 15th century. During the Napoleonic occupation, the building was used as a stable.

The basilica has three naves. On the north side of the building there is an attached sacristy, which perfectly complements its architectural appearance. The altars of the temple were erected at different times by different Hamburg guilds. At the beginning of the 16th century, an altar was built by the fishermen's guild in honor of St. Peter. The main altar of the temple was erected by the coopers' guild.

The tower of the church was created in the form of a cone and topped with a copper dome. Currently, the tower houses a small observation cafe, at an altitude of 84 meters.

One of the main attractions of the temple is the organ, which was installed in the church back in 1693. Also of interest are the medieval altars of the church – the altar of the Holy Trinity, installed in 1518, the altar of St. Peter, installed in 1508, and the altar of St. Lucas, installed in 1500.
