Wellington Arch is close to popular attractions such as Green Park, Hyde Park and Buckingham Palace Gardens. This massive structure attracts with its interesting architecture, observation deck and, of course, its history.

The memorial structure appeared in the 30s of the 19th century at the request of King George IV. The Wellington Arch, like the Marble Arch, is a monument that depicts the victory of the British army over Napoleon's troops in history. Architect and landscape designer Decimus Burton has created a monumental structure, but in terms of decoration and delights it pales in comparison with other memorials. But initially the architect provided a grandiose plan of the building, in which there was room for the royal luxury and creative energy of the master. However, George IV decided to undertake the reconstruction of Buckingham Palace, and the Arch lost part of the allocated funds.

Because of this, Wellington Arch is considered a rather modest monument. But it was not always so. At the time when the monument was at Epsley House, the famous residence of the Dukes of Wellington, which is north of Hyde Park, an incredible equestrian statue was erected on it. She portrayed the British commander, Prime Minister of Britain, a famous and respected person - Arthur Wellesley, who was riding a horse. The eight-meter sculpture, designed by the master Matthew Coates Wyatt, is still the largest equestrian statue in all of Europe. The aesthetics of this sculpture then caused a lot of controversy.

Now the monument stands in the corner of Hyde Park, it was moved during the widening of the road at the end of the 19th century. Now it acts as a gateway to Constitution Hill, which is located in the central part of the so-called pedestrian “island of safety.”

Arthur Wellesley no longer towers over the Arch; town of Aldershot. The giant rider was replaced by an equally huge bronze chariot created by Adrian Jones. It is a sculptural composition depicting an angel of peace, who descends on a military quadriga. The small charioteer depicted at the same time resembles the son of Lord Michelham, who allocated funds for the construction of the sculpture.

Inside the Arch there is a small room that until recently occupied a police post. Now the entire architectural structure is under the management of the English Heritage Foundation, and inside the monument a historical exposition has been created, telling about the history of the Arch. Climbing to the top of the monument, you can enjoy the view of the green spaces of Hyde Park and Green Park, see Buckingham Palace and the attractions of this quarter.
