Schallaburg Palace in Austria, Lower Austria resort
Rating: 8,3/10 (6031 votes)  Schallaburg Palace is located in the picturesque Wachau Valley, just 5 kilometers from Melk. Nowadays, the palace is one of the popular attractions of Lower Austria. The construction of the castle began in the 16th century. The palace received its characteristic appearance during the reign of the Losenstein dynasty. Representatives of this family tried to create a manor out of the castle like Italian palaces. Nowadays you can see unique decorative sculptures here, a courtyard for tournaments, testifying to the prosperity of the owners, as well as their love for art ... One of the interesting sculptures is 'Hundefr & auml; ulein' – a woman with a dog's head, representing the personages of local legends. There are also unique mosaics depicting fabulous creatures and mythological characters. At the gate of the castle there are statues of two dragons, reaching a height of six meters. The interiors of the castle are richly decorated, and are often the site of annual exhibitions on ethnography, cultural history and modern history. Around the castle there is a picturesque Renaissance park, perfect for walks and families.
