The construction of the cathedral began in 1926 after the purchase of a land plot, and a year later the church was consecrated and became a local parish church, however, after eight years, the church was demolished and a more spacious church was built in its place, the one that still stands in Semarang. In the forties of the twentieth century, after the establishment of the City Apostolic Vicariate by the Holy See, the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary became a cathedral. Currently, the Vicariate of Semarang has been elevated to the status of an archdiocese, and the cathedral is still its center. The history of the church cannot boast of any significant events: during the years of the Indonesian War of Independence, the cathedral's pulpit was moved to Bintaran, and in 1949 they were installed in their rightful place. The building itself was not damaged at all during the years of the conflict. Now the Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary is active, has its own conference room, as well as a Catholic school.
