The Brandenburg Gate is a triumphal arch located in the very center of Berlin, an architectural monument, a symbol of the city. Created in 1788-1791. Towering over the Parisian square, the gate reminds of the time when the city could be entered by driving through it. For a long time, the gate was a symbol of the division of Germany, and after 1989 - a sign of the country's reunification. The only surviving gate in Berlin and the first example of so-called Berlin Classicism. Their original name is the Gate of the World.

The gate was ordered by Frederick Wilhelm II, designed by Karl Gotthard Langhans. The gates reach 26 meters in height, and 65.5 and 11 meters in width and thickness, respectively.

The Brandenburg Gate is made up of twelve Greek columns. Their creation was inspired by the ancient Greek Propylaea (the entrance to the Athenian Parthenon).

The gate is crowned by the famous Quadriga, so beloved by tourists, erected by Gottfried Shadov in 1793. It depicts the goddess of Peace, driving a chariot drawn by four horses. Napoleon liked this Quadriga so much that he moved it to Paris. Quadriga returned to Berlin in 1814. Then the laurel wreath was replaced with an iron cross created by Friedrich Schinkel, and the goddess of Peace became the goddess of Victory.

The Nazis who came to power used the gate as a symbol of their strength. After the Second World War, with its bombing, in 1945, the gate remained the only structure towering among the ruins. After the end of the war, the gates were restored, and a Hall of Silence was built in their northern part, where visitors still come to this day, wishing to remember and reflect on the experiences of the country. In 1961, the gate was built into the Berlin Wall dividing the city in two and closed. They only reopened in 1989, when the Berlin Wall fell.

Today the Brandenburg Gate blends in perfectly with the surrounding architecture of the restored buildings.
