The museum belongs to the Finnish Orthodox church government and has the status of a state one. The Church Museum in Kuopio was founded in 1957, and the building for it was built in 1969. The museum exhibits a variety of icons, church utensils from the Valaam and Konevets monasteries, liturgical vestments and other items. Most of the exhibits date back to the 18th-19th centuries, and the oldest items date from the Middle Ages. Quite a significant part of the exhibits entered the collection during the Second World War.
