The reserve occupies 2 700 hectares. Siculs were the first inhabitants of these places. In XI – X centuries BC on this territory they founded two small settlements. One of them was in the north, the other – on South. Hundreds of tombs carved into the rock at parallel levels have survived to this day. The Kassibile River flows through the reserve, which has formed a number of deep canyons over many millennia. At the end of the river valley, a complex system of small cascades was created. The flora of the reserve is quite diverse, including thyme, sage, sweet rue, oregano, mint, ivy, oak and blackberry. Sprawling trees grow along the banks – black and white poplars, oriental plane trees and Mediterranean willows. Among the birds in the reserve live oil warbler, kestrel, peregrine falcon, falcon, etc. We also recommend reading Ancient salt fields of Sicily in Italy, resort of Sicily Topic: Nature Reserve”Cavagrande del Cassibile” in Italy, resort of Sicily. |
