The Lurgrotte Caves are the largest stalactite caves in Austria. They are located 25 kilometers north of the city of Graz.

Officially, the caves were discovered by the Italian speleologist Max Brunello in 1894. But   the first mentions of these caves date back to 1822. The caves gained their fame after an accident. So in April 1894, seven cavers, fleeing a heavy downpour, took refuge in caves and were trapped here due to flooding. Only after 9 days they were able to be brought to the surface alive, thanks to the rescue operation, where more than a thousand volunteers (divers, miners) took part.
