Another name for this memorial complex – Museum on July 26th.

The events that gave the name to this place are connected, of course, with the revolutionary uprising against the Batista regime. Until 1953, there was one of the largest bases of the general's troops here. On the day of the annual Carnival, Fidel Castro, leading a detachment of rebels, planned to seize this fortress in order to have supplies of weapons for further fighting the dictatorial regime. Poorly trained riflemen, disguised as a garrison, made their way inside the fortress and unexpectedly bumped into Batista's patrol.

120 of the 135 rebels were shot on the spot. Fidel himself was among the few survivors.

In memory of the victims of the regime of General Batista, this historical museum was opened. Now the municipality of the city carefully guards every stone of this fortress, even the traces of bullets at the place of the execution of the rebels look as if they had just been shot.
